A2P 10DLC registration for insurance agencies, step by step

· 6 min read

If your agency texts customers from a regular local number, the mobile carriers expect that texting to be registered. Here is what the registration involves and how to avoid the usual rejections.

What A2P 10DLC means

A2P stands for application-to-person: texts sent by a business system rather than typed on a personal phone. 10DLC means a 10-digit long code, the ordinary local phone number most agencies text from. US mobile carriers require businesses that send A2P texts from these numbers to register who they are and what they send. Unregistered business texting is filtered, slowed or blocked.

Registration happens through your texting provider, which submits it to The Campaign Registry, the industry database the carriers use.

Step 1: Gather your business details

Have these ready before you start. They need to match public records exactly:

  • The agency's legal business name, exactly as it appears on your EIN paperwork.
  • Your EIN (federal tax ID).
  • Business address, phone and website.
  • The business type and industry (insurance).
  • A contact person with an email address at your agency's domain.

Step 2: Register your brand

The brand is your agency. The registry checks that the business is real and that the name and tax ID match. Mismatches are the most common reason a brand fails, such as a DBA entered where the legal name belongs, or an old address.

Step 3: Register your campaign

The campaign describes what you text and why. You will be asked for:

  • A use case, such as customer care, account notifications or marketing. Agencies that both service customers and follow up on quotes often register a mixed use case.
  • A plain description of the messages you send.
  • Two or more sample messages that include your agency's name.
  • How people agree to receive texts (opt-in), for example a checkbox on your lead form or a request made on a phone call.
  • Your opt-out and help wording, such as replying STOP to opt out and HELP for help.

Step 4: Wait for approval, then attach your numbers

Reviews can take from a few days to a few weeks. Once the campaign is approved, your agency's numbers are attached to it and texts flow normally. Registration fees vary by provider, so check yours.

Why campaigns get rejected

  • The website doesn't load, doesn't match the business name, or has no privacy policy.
  • The privacy policy doesn't say that mobile numbers and consent aren't shared with third parties.
  • The opt-in description is vague, or the website has no visible place where people opt in.
  • Sample messages don't name the agency or don't include opt-out wording.
  • The use case doesn't match the samples, for example marketing samples on a customer-care campaign.

Texting consent rules for leads, especially purchased leads, are their own topic. Talk with your compliance advisor about what consent your lead sources collect.

Insurance CRM walks agencies through brand and campaign registration inside the app, and handles STOP replies and quiet hours once you're texting.
